How to Prep for Your Color Appointment
Booking a hair color appointment is exciting—you’re about to refresh your look and walk out of the salon with confidence. But did you know that how you prepare before your appointment can impact your final results? At Olive + Oak Hair Salon, we want every client to have the best possible experience. That’s why we’ve put together this guide on how to prepare for your hair color appointment so you can get the most out of your visit.
1. Wash Your Hair Within 24–48 Hours
Your stylist needs a clean canvas to apply color evenly. Aim to wash your hair within one to two days before your appointment. This removes excess oils, dry shampoo, and product buildup that can interfere with color absorption, but still leaves your natural oils to protect your scalp.
2. Bring Photos of Your Dream Hair Color
A picture speaks a thousand words, right? When it comes to describing hair color, everyone’s idea of “caramel highlights” or “chocolate brown” can look different. To avoid confusion, bring 2–3 inspiration photos that show the tones, brightness, and overall style you’re hoping for. This ensures you and your stylist are aligned on your vision.
3. Share Your Hair History
For the best and safest results, it’s important to be honest about your hair history. Let your stylist know if you’ve used:
Box dye
Bleach
Previous salon color
Keratin treatments or perms
Even if it’s been months (or years), this information helps us determine the right formulas and processes for your hair.
4. Wear the Right Outfit
Skip turtlenecks or tight collars and wear something with a wide neckline or buttons. This makes it easy to change without disturbing your fresh color and blowout. Plus, you’ll be more comfortable during your appointment.
5. Plan for Appointment Time
Depending on your service, a hair color appointment can take anywhere from 2–4+ hours. Bring headphones, a book, or simply enjoy some quiet time while we transform your look. Preparing for the time commitment ensures a stress-free salon visit.
6. Be Open With Your Stylist
Your hair color should fit your lifestyle, budget, and maintenance preferences. During your consultation, let your stylist know if you want something low-maintenance, bold, or seasonal. The more open you are, the better your stylist can customize your look.
7. Trust the Process
If you’re making a dramatic change—like going from dark brunette to blonde—it may take more than one session. Trust that your stylist is focused on both the health of your hair and achieving your long-term color goals.
